The Gallery Borghese, or Borghese Mansion as it was originally known, was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese to Flaminio Ponzio and Vasanzio and built between 1613 and 1614. Site of Cardinal Borghese’s art collection, its extraordinary masterpieces have contributed to making it renowned all over Europe.

 

Your guide will show you around the amazing artworks on show. The museum houses an important collection of works by Bernini, Raphael, Caravaggio and Canova. Canova's Victorious Venus (1805), internationally known as Paolina Bonaparte, is the most famous piece in the museum and is virtually its symbol.

The collection is arranged over two floors and around 20 decorated rooms; the lower floor is mainly dedicated to sculpture; the upper floor to paintings.

 

Among the most famous artwork in Rome's Villa Borghese are Caravaggio paintings that span the career of this brilliant but volatile painter, including:

  • Boy with a Basket of Fruit, ca. 1593-94
  • Self-portrait as Bacchus (Sick Bacchus), ca. 1593-94
  • Madonna of the Palafrenieri, 1605-06
  • St. John the Baptist, 1610
  • David with the Head of Goliath, 1606
  • Borghese Gallery is home to Bernini’s first masterpieces, Rape of Proserpina, Apollo & Daphne and David.

The museum has one of the best collections of art in the world in terms of sculpture, painting and architecture. You will find paintings by Rubens, Raphael, Guido Reni, Domenicchino, Parmigianino, Correggio and so many more.Your guide will give you in-depth insight into the work of Italy's masters.

 

The tour includes a half-hour introduction prior to entry, a 2-hour tour of the museums, and a half-hour post-tour discussion after exiting the building.
